Grade Calculator – Weighted Grade & Final Score Tool

Academic Grade Calculator

Easily calculate your weighted grade or find out the score needed on your final exam to reach your goal. Designed for high school & university students.

About Grade Calculator Tool

The Academic Grade Calculator helps students understand weighted grading systems— where assignments, quizzes, exams, and finals carry different percentage values. Instead of manually applying formulas, this tool instantly calculates your real standing.

It includes two modes, designed for different academic needs:

Weighted Grade Mode

Used by most colleges and AP courses. For example: Exams (40%), Homework (20%), Labs (20%), Final (20%). This mode helps you calculate your true current grade by entering your categories along with their weights.

Target / Final Exam Mode

Perfect for finals week! Enter your current grade, target grade, and final exam weight. The calculator shows exactly what score you need on your final exam to achieve your target.

Who is this for?

University Students

College courses almost always use weighted grading. Use this tool to prioritize your studying. If "Homework" is only 10% of your grade but "Midterms" are 50%, you know where to focus your energy.

High School Students

Especially useful for AP (Advanced Placement) or IB classes where weighting is applied. Track your GPA progress and ensure you maintain the grades needed for college applications.

Teachers & Advisors

Help students understand realistic goals during counseling sessions. Quickly calculate "what-if" scenarios to show a student if passing is mathematically possible based on remaining coursework.

Limitations

Please note: Grading scales differ by institution.

  • This calculator assumes a standard percentage-based system (0-100).
  • It does not automatically drop lowest grades (unless you calculate that manually before entering).
  • For point-based systems (Total Points Earned / Total Points Possible), use our "Simple Calculation" mode in the Percentage Calculator tool.

Formulas Used

Calculation Formula
Weighted Grade Sum of (Score × Weight) / Sum of Weights
Target Final Score (Target - (Current × (1 - FinalWeight))) / FinalWeight

Practical Examples

Example 1: Final Exam Target

Situation: You have an 85% current grade. You want an A (90%). The final is worth 30%.

Formula: (90 - (85 × 0.7)) / 0.3

Result: You need 101.6% (Impossible)

Conclusion: An A is mathematically impossible without extra credit.

Example 2: Weighted Calculation

  • Homework (20%): 90 score
  • Midterm (30%): 80 score
  • Final (50%): 70 score

Calc: (90×0.2) + (80×0.3) + (70×0.5)

Result: 18 + 24 + 35 = 77%

FAQ

A simple average adds up all scores and divides by the number of assignments (e.g., (90+80)/2 = 85). A weighted grade assigns value based on importance. If exams are worth 70% and homework 30%, scoring low on an exam hurts your grade much more than scoring low on homework. This calculator handles that math for you.

In "Weighted Grade" mode, if your weights sum to less than 100 (e.g., 50%), the calculator scales your grade based on the completed work only. This is useful in the middle of the semester when not all assignments have been graded yet.

If the calculator says you need a negative score (e.g., -10%), it means your current grade is so high that even if you score a 0% on the final exam, you will still achieve your target grade. You have mathematically secured that grade.

Not directly. This tool calculates the percentage grade (0-100) for a specific class. Once you have that percentage, you can convert it to a Letter Grade (A, B, C) or GPA Point (4.0, 3.0) using our separate GPA Calculator or CGPA Calculator.
