    How this thumbnail downloader works

    Reads the video ID

Watch, youtu.be, Shorts, live, embed and mobile links all work, as does an 11-character video ID on its own. Tracking codes like si= are ignored.

    Checks every size

YouTube stores up to five sizes per video. Each is loaded and measured, so sizes YouTube hasn't made are marked "not available" instead of showing a grey placeholder.

    Saves it your way

Download as JPG or WebP, crop the black bars off the 4:3 sizes, or copy the image link to use elsewhere.

Check it yourself. Open your browser's developer tools (F12) and choose the Network tab. You'll see image requests to i.ytimg.com only, and none to our site.

    Which thumbnail sizes YouTube makes

Every public video has thumbnails at fixed addresses on i.ytimg.com, named by size. The tool builds those addresses from the video ID and loads each image to measure it. When YouTube hasn't made a size, it returns a 120×90 grey placeholder instead, so any size that comes back at 120×90 (other than the smallest) is marked "not available".

Crop to 16:9 cuts the bars from the 4:3 sizes: a 480×360 image becomes 480×270, keeping only the picture. WebP versions come from YouTube's own vi_webp folder rather than being converted, so quality matches the JPG.

    Thumbnail mistakes to avoid

Common ways downloaded thumbnails end up looking bad or causing trouble.

    Reusing another channel's thumbnail

It can lead to a copyright claim. Use it for reference, then design your own.

    Stretching 4:3 to fill 16:9

Faces look wide and the bars stay. Crop to 16:9 instead.

    Enlarging the 120×90 size

It turns blurry. Always start from the largest size available.

    Uploading WebP to YouTube

YouTube asks for JPG, PNG or GIF. Keep WebP for websites.

Good habits for working with thumbnails

    Studying other videos

    • Collect thumbnails from the top videos for your topic.
    • Compare text size, faces and colours side by side.
    • Notice what's readable at 320×180, the size in search.
    • Keep a folder of ideas, not copies to reuse.

    Making your own

    • Design at 1280×720 and keep it under 2 MB.
    • Check it still reads clearly when small.
    • Match the thumbnail to the title's promise.
    • Back up your own thumbnails here if you lose the originals.

    Frequently asked questions

Short answers about sizes, black bars, Shorts and using thumbnails.

What is the highest thumbnail quality I can download?

1280×720 pixels, which YouTube calls maxresdefault. YouTube creates it for most HD uploads and custom thumbnails, but not every video has it. When it's missing, the tool marks it as not available and the next best size is 640×480.

Can I use a YouTube thumbnail I downloaded?

Thumbnails belong to the creator who made them. Using one for reference, study, or in a review or news story that discusses the video is common, but rules on fair use differ by country. To reuse a thumbnail on your own channel, product or ad, ask the creator for permission.

Why do some thumbnails have black bars?

The 640×480 and 480×360 sizes are 4:3 images, so YouTube adds black bars above and below the 16:9 picture. Press Crop to 16:9 on those sizes to save a version without the bars.

Does it work with YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste a Shorts link and you get the same sizes. Shorts thumbnails are stored as 16:9 images, so the vertical frame sits in the middle with blurred or plain sides.

Why does Download open the image in a new tab?

If your browser blocks saving the image directly, the tool opens it in a new tab instead. Right-click it and choose Save image as, or long-press it on a phone.

Is anything sent to your server?

No. The video ID is read from your link in your browser, and the thumbnails load straight from YouTube's image server, i.ytimg.com. Your recent videos are saved only in this browser, and Clear removes them.

Can I get thumbnails for private videos?

No. Private and deleted videos have no public thumbnail. Unlisted videos work if you have the link.
