Words
A word is a sequence of characters separated by whitespace — spaces, tabs, or line breaks. Punctuation stays attached, so one,two counts as one word, and hyphenated terms like well-known are one word.
Characters
"With spaces" counts every character, including spaces and line breaks. "Without spaces" subtracts spaces, tabs, and line breaks.
Sentences
Sentences are estimated from ., ?, and ! punctuation. Abbreviations and unusual punctuation can affect the result.
Paragraphs
Text is split on line breaks; empty lines are not counted.
Reading & speaking time
Reading time = words ÷ 225 per minute, an average silent-reading pace. Speaking time = words ÷ 150 per minute, a common presentation pace. Both are estimates.
Unique vs repeated words
Unique-word analysis ignores case and surrounding punctuation, so Word, word, and word. count as one unique word. Remove Repeated Words compares exact entries and is case-sensitive.

Troubleshooting
If a number looks wrong or a button does nothing, it is usually one of these.
Statistics aren't updating
Make sure JavaScript is enabled, then refresh. If a browser extension modifies the page, try a private window with extensions disabled.
The Paste button does nothing
Some browsers block clipboard access until you allow it. Click in the editor and paste with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac). This avoids the browser clipboard permission used by the Paste button.
File upload doesn't work
Only .txt and .md files are supported. For other formats such as .docx or .pdf, copy the text from your document and paste it into the editor.
The count differs from Microsoft Word or Google Docs
This editor counts only the visible text you type or paste. Footnotes, comments, and text boxes are not included, and hyphens, URLs, and abbreviations such as Dr. can be counted differently — see How we count.

How do you define a word?

Why is my count different from Microsoft Word?
Word can include footnotes, comments, text boxes, and different hyphenation rules. This counter analyzes only the visible text in the editor, using the rules in How we count. It does not try to match Word exactly.
Do you count characters with spaces, emoji, and line breaks?
Yes. "With spaces" counts every character, including spaces, emoji, and line breaks. "Without spaces" subtracts spaces, tabs, and line breaks from that total.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is words ÷ 225 per minute, an average silent-reading pace. Speaking time is words ÷ 150 per minute, a common presentation pace. Both are estimates, not a measure of your own speed.
Does this tool send my text to a server?
No. The Word Counter processes your text on your device — counting, transformations, and file imports all run in your browser. A draft copy is saved only in this browser's local storage until you clear site data.
Are numbers, URLs, and hashtags counted as words?
Yes. A number like 2026, a full URL, and a hashtag like #seo each count as one word because they contain no whitespace.
Is there a limit to how much text I can paste in?
There is no fixed limit enforced by the tool. As a practical guideline, drafts around 100,000 words or 500,000 characters remain workable; very large inputs can slow your browser tab because all processing runs on your device.
Can I save or export my text and results?
Yes. The download button saves a .txt report that includes your input text and all generated results. You can also copy the editor text, copy the transformed output, or copy the tool link. Drafts autosave in this browser only.
Can I upload text files?
Yes. Use Upload File or drag and drop a .txt or .md file onto the editor. Your browser reads the file on your device; the tool does not upload it.
What is the Output section for?
Transformations (case, collapse extra spaces, remove repeated words) write their result to the Output section. Your original input stays untouched until you press Replace Input.
