The Flesch Reading Ease score ranges from 0–100. Higher scores = easier to read.

Sentences Too Long

Too Many Complex Words
High percentage of 3+ syllable words.
Fix: Replace jargon with simpler alternatives. "Utilize" → "use", "commence" → "start", "facilitate" → "help". Keep technical terms only when necessary.
Dense Paragraphs
Paragraphs with 6+ sentences.
Fix: Break paragraphs at natural topic shifts. Aim for 2–4 sentences per paragraph for web content. Use subheadings to organize.
Wrong Reading Level
Score doesn't match your target audience.

Passive Voice Overuse
Too many passive constructions.

What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?
For most web content targeting a broad audience, a score of 60–70 is a common recommendation. This corresponds to an 8th–9th grade reading level, which is generally suitable for a broad adult audience. Higher scores (70–80) work well for marketing copy; lower scores (50–60) are acceptable for technical content.
Why use 4 different formulas?
Each formula uses different inputs and was designed for different contexts. Flesch is general-purpose, Gunning Fog focuses on complex words, Coleman-Liau uses character counts (does not require syllable counting), and SMOG is healthcare-focused. Using all four gives a more complete picture.
Does readability affect SEO rankings?
Not directly. While readability itself is not a confirmed Google ranking factor, clear content can support a better overall page experience and make it easier for visitors to understand and navigate your pages.
How can I improve my readability score?
1) Use shorter sentences (aim for 15–20 words average). 2) Replace complex words with simpler alternatives. 3) Use active voice instead of passive. 4) Break long paragraphs into 2–4 sentences. 5) Use bullet points and subheadings to organize.
Why does SMOG show "N/A"?
The SMOG formula traditionally requires at least 30 sentences for stable estimation. If your text has fewer than 30 sentences, SMOG can't be reliably calculated. Use the other three formulas for shorter texts.
What's the minimum text length for stable results?
We require at least 20 words to run the analysis, but for more stable results, a length of 300+ words is recommended. Very short texts give unstable scores because a single long sentence can skew the averages.
Is my text saved on your server?
No. Your text is sent to our server for analysis but is not saved by this tool in its own database. We calculate the scores and return them immediately. Only a temporary rate-limit record (IP hash + count) is kept for abuse prevention.
Can I use this for non-English text?
The formulas are designed for English text. Syllable counting and word-length assumptions are English-specific. For other languages, the scores may be inaccurate. Use language-specific readability tools for non-English content.
