PDF to JSON Converter — extract PDF text into page-based JSON, right in your browser
Converts native, text-based PDFs into clean, organized JSON with a live preview of both your document and the generated output before download.
Extracts text, not visual layout. Fonts, styling, tables, and column boundaries are not preserved as relational cells. Scanned image-only PDFs require OCR before conversion.
Convert your PDF to JSON
Select a text-based PDF, choose your output format, and preview the JSON before downloading.
Local in-browser processing
Your PDF is processed locally in your browser using PDF.js. No document upload to our server is required.

Text extraction with page-based JSON
PDF text is often stored out of reading order. This converter organizes fragments by vertical coordinates into readable lines.
What it does
- Groups text items by relative vertical position into top-to-bottom lines.
- Provides choices for structured, detailed coordinates, or simple JSON output.
- Offers an interactive live preview and one-click copy before downloading.
- Allows in-browser decryption for supported password-protected PDFs.
What it does not do
- Does not read scanned or raster image PDFs without an existing OCR text layer.
- Does not retain fonts, colors, or CSS styling — output is plain JSON text.
- Does not reconstruct tables into relational matrices or split multi-column spans automatically.
Four steps from PDF to JSON
Select your PDF, choose output preferences, convert, and review your JSON.
Select PDF
Drag your document into the console or browse your files. If encrypted, you will be prompted to unlock it.
Choose Structure
Select how your data should be serialized:
Extract & Convert
Click Convert to run position-based text grouping across all document pages.
Review & Download
Inspect the formatted JSON preview, copy to your clipboard, or save to disk.
Where this converter fits best
Understand the ideal use cases and when an alternative format is recommended.
| Workflow / Use Case | Why | Fit Level |
|---|---|---|
| Ingesting text into scripts & APIs | Structured per-page arrays are straightforward to parse programmatically. | Good Fit |
| Archiving textual content | Line-oriented extraction creates clean, easily searchable raw data. | Good Fit |
| NLP data preparation | Useful baseline input for text cleaning, tokenization, and pipeline ingestion. | Useful Baseline |
| Scanned documents or receipts | No OCR engine included; scanned PDFs return empty strings. | Use OCR First |
| Spreadsheets & complex tables | Columns are merged line-by-line rather than separated into table cells. | Use PDF to Excel |
| Visual document editing | Styling, vector graphics, and fonts are excluded from JSON output. | Use PDF to Word |
Why reading order requires coordinate logic
PDF files store text streams as arbitrary coordinate commands rather than linear paragraphs.
Internal stream sequence is non-linear
PDF creators frequently write headers, footnotes, watermarks, or edits in arbitrary sequence, meaning raw character dumps often appear scrambled.
Coordinate clustering into lines
Every text fragment contains X and Y transformation matrix coordinates. Our algorithm groups fragments sharing similar vertical thresholds into distinct lines.
Top-to-bottom line sorting
Lines are sorted by descending Y coordinates (top of page to bottom), and fragments within each line are sorted left-to-right to restore natural reading flow.
Troubleshooting common conversion issues
Practical solutions for handling irregular PDF structures.
JSON output is empty
The PDF consists of raster images or scanned photos without a selectable text layer.
Apply an OCR tool to embed searchable text into the PDF, then convert.
Multi-column text reads across
Text grouping is based on horizontal scanlines; newspaper-style columns share identical Y positions.
Use the "Detailed Elements" format to receive raw coordinates, or split columns in downstream code.
Password rejected
Password mismatch or file is locked with unsupported master-only certificate permissions.
Verify capitalization and ensure you are entering the user/open password.
Jumbled table structure
Table rows are extracted as plain text strings rather than key-value matrix cells.
Use a dedicated PDF to Excel/CSV tool for tabular spreadsheets.
Empty JSON
Cause: Scanned image PDF.
Fix: Run OCR first.
Column Ordering
Cause: Shared vertical coordinates.
Fix: Inspect JSON preview or choose Detailed Elements.
Password Error
Cause: Incorrect open password.
Fix: Check credentials.
Jumbled Tables
Cause: Text merged by scanline.
Fix: Use PDF to Excel.
Best practices for clean data extraction
Tips to ensure optimal conversion results.
Inspect the JSON preview
Always review the live output preview to check line grouping before integrating the file downstream.
Use Detailed Elements for layout analysis
Detailed Elements outputs exact X and Y coordinates for building spatial heuristics in code.
Verify text selection in original PDF
Ensure text can be highlighted and copied in your desktop PDF viewer before uploading.
Use specialized tools for tables
If extracting complex spreadsheets, dedicated column-aware tools preserve table relations better.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions regarding format compatibility and data security.
Can this tool read scanned or image-based PDFs?
No. This tool extracts text from native, text-based PDF documents. It does not perform OCR, so it cannot read text from scanned images or photos within a PDF.
Will the JSON preserve my PDF's formatting and layout?
No. Fonts, colors, bold or italic styling, and layouts like tables and columns are not preserved. Text fragments are organized by vertical position into lines, but the output is plain structured JSON, not a visual layout copy.
What happens with a password-protected PDF?
You will be prompted to enter the password directly in your browser. Supported password-protected PDFs are decrypted locally via PDF.js without sending credentials anywhere.
Is there a limit to the PDF file size?
Since processing occurs entirely in client memory, performance depends on your device CPU and RAM. Complex or multi-hundred-page PDFs may take longer to process.
Is it safe to convert sensitive PDF files here?
Yes. Conversion runs locally in your browser using PDF.js. No document upload to a conversion server is required.
