The grayscale conversion itself never touches transparency — it only rewrites the red, green, and blue values of each pixel. What happens to any transparent areas comes down entirely to your export format.

Grayscale JPEG shows black where the image was transparent
This tool has no background-fill step at all, so a transparent PNG exported as JPEG typically turns those areas black rather than white.
- Export as PNG or WEBP if transparency needs to be kept
- Flatten the image onto a solid background before uploading if JPEG is required
An uploaded file has no preview
Upload only checks that the file's type starts with "image/" — a HEIC or TIFF file can pass that check but still fail to render, since this tool has no decoder for those formats.

I want a partial gray effect, not fully black and white
The toggle is strictly on or off — there's no way to blend between color and grayscale.

What image formats are supported?
You can upload JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, BMP, GIF (non-animated), and SVG. You can convert any of these formats to grayscale, and export as JPEG, PNG, or WEBP.
Does converting to grayscale reduce image quality?
The conversion preserves the original resolution of your image. We use a luminance-based formula for a natural black and white look. When you download, you can choose the output format and quality settings.
Can I convert multiple images at once?
You can upload up to 5 images and toggle grayscale on each one individually, then use Download All to download every image in sequence.
Is the conversion reversible?
Yes. Toggle the Grayscale Effect switch off to revert to the original color image at any time. Your original file on your computer is never altered.
How does the grayscale conversion work?
This tool uses a standard luminance-preserving formula: Gray = 0.299 × Red + 0.587 × Green + 0.114 × Blue. This calculates the perceived brightness of each pixel, giving a more natural result than simply averaging the color channels.
