What this tool does

Markdown in, a formatted document out.

A README, meeting notes, documentation or an answer copied from a chat assistant becomes a PDF with real headings, lists, tables and code, ready to print, email or attach.

What you get

  • Headings, bold, italic, strikethrough and inline code, as written in CommonMark and GitHub Markdown.
  • Bulleted, numbered and nested lists, and task lists with ticked and empty boxes.
  • Tables with column alignment and the header row repeated on every page.
  • Code blocks on a shaded background, quotes with a side bar, and horizontal rules.
  • Links you can click in the PDF, and pictures from the web or added from your device.
  • Text you can select and search, with a heading, file name and page numbers if you want them.

What it can't do

  • Run HTML inside the Markdown. Simple tags such as b or br are read, other HTML is left out.
  • Colour code by language. Code blocks keep their layout in a fixed-width font, in one colour.
  • Draw maths formulas or diagrams such as Mermaid; they appear as the text you typed.
  • Load pictures from websites that block other sites from reading them. Download the picture and add it with Add pictures.

How to turn Markdown into a PDF in three steps

The details

Markdown this tool reads

CommonMark, plus the GitHub additions people use most.

  • # HeadingSix levels; underlined with === or --- too
  • **bold** *italic*Also __bold__, _italic_ and ~~struck~~
  • - [x] DoneTask lists, nested lists, numbered lists
  • | a | b |Tables with :--: alignment
  • [text](url)Links, reference links and bare web addresses
  • \pagebreakA line on its own starts a new page

How your Markdown is laid out

What happens to each part on the page.

Headings

From twice the text size for # down to slightly smaller for ######, in bold, with a rule under the first two levels. A heading is never left alone at the bottom of a page.

Tables

Columns are sized to their content and wrap when the page is too narrow. The header row is shaded and repeats at the top of every page the table runs onto.

Code

Code blocks use Courier on a light shaded background, with every space kept. Lines too long for the page are wrapped at the edge instead of cut off.

Links

Links are blue and underlined, and open their web address when clicked in the PDF, even when the pages are saved as pictures.

Pictures

Pictures go on a line of their own, as wide as the text at most. A picture that can't be found is shown as its name, and the result says which ones to add.

Gujarati, Hindi and more

The PDF's built-in fonts only have Western letters. For any other script, Create PDF draws each page as a sharp picture with your device's fonts. Print or save as PDF keeps it as text.

When something doesn't look right

What usually causes it, and what to change.

Problem
Why it happens
Fix

A picture shows as its name

It is linked by a file name on your computer, or the website it is on doesn't let other sites load it.

Press Add pictures and choose the file with the same name.

Symbols like ** or # are printed

The marks aren't written the way Markdown expects, such as #Heading without a space or ** with a space inside.

Write # Heading with a space, and **bold** with no space next to the stars.

A table comes out as plain lines

The second line must be the divider row, such as |---|---|, with one part for each column.

Add the divider row straight under the header row.

Text can't be selected

The Markdown has letters outside the Western set, so pages were saved as pictures. The note above Create PDF says so.

Use Print or save as PDF and pick Save as PDF as the printer.

A cleaner PDF every time

Small habits in the Markdown that pay off on paper.

One # per document

Use # for the title and ## for sections; the PDF title is taken from the first heading.

Blank lines between blocks

Leave an empty line before lists, tables and code, so each is read as its own block.

Name your links

[our pricing](https://...) reads better on paper than a long web address.

Keep tables narrow

Four or five columns fit a portrait page; for more, switch to Landscape.

Add alt text to pictures

The text inside ![ ] is what shows if a picture can't be loaded.

Keep the .md

Changing the Markdown and creating the PDF again is quicker than editing a PDF.

Common questions about Markdown to PDF

If something's not covered here, the sections above likely have it.

Is my Markdown uploaded to a server?

No. The Markdown is read and laid out in your browser, and the PDF is made there with pdf-lib. Your text and pictures are not uploaded to the AllInOneTools server. Pictures linked from websites are loaded from those websites by your browser.

Which Markdown does it support?

CommonMark with the GitHub additions: headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, code blocks, quotes, bulleted, numbered and nested lists, task lists, tables with alignment, horizontal rules, links, reference links, bare web addresses and pictures. Simple HTML tags like b and br are read; other HTML is left out.

Are the links clickable in the PDF?

Yes. Each link is blue and underlined and opens its web address when clicked in a PDF reader, including on pages saved as pictures for Gujarati or Hindi text.

How do I include pictures from my computer?

Press Add pictures and choose the picture files the Markdown links to. A picture written as ![Chart](images/chart.png) uses the file you add named chart.png. Pictures from websites and data: links are loaded on their own when the website allows it.

Can I start a new page?

Yes. Put \pagebreak on a line of its own, or turn on Start each top-level heading on a new page to begin every # heading on a fresh page.

Can I convert Markdown in Gujarati or Hindi?

Yes. The PDF's built-in fonts only have Western letters, so Create PDF draws those pages as sharp pictures with your device's fonts and every letter looks right, but the text can't be selected. Print or save as PDF keeps the text selectable.

Is the text in the PDF selectable and searchable?

Yes, for Markdown in English and other Western languages. Headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and code are written as real PDF text in Helvetica, Times or Courier, so you can search, select and copy it.
