Troubleshooting
Separate missing tags from failed reading.
It says no metadata found
The file was read, but it carries no tags.
- WhatsApp and social apps strip tags.
- Screenshots rarely have camera data.
- Ask for the original file instead.
The file could not be read
The file is damaged or uses an unusual layout.
- File details are still listed.
- Try the original, not a copy.
- Or another browser.
No preview for HEIC or TIFF
This browser cannot draw the format, but the tags are read.

- TIFF previews need Safari.
- A clean copy needs a preview.

Know what the report can establish
How do I see the EXIF data of a photo?
Add the photo to the box above, or paste it with Ctrl+V. Key facts shows the camera, date taken, exposure, size and location in plain words, and All fields lists every tag the file carries, grouped and searchable.
How can I find out when a photo was taken?
Look at Taken in Key facts, which comes from DateTimeOriginal: the moment the camera saved the shot, by the device's own clock. File modified time is a different value and changes when a file is copied.
How do I check if a photo shows my location?
If the file has GPS, the Location row in Key facts shows the coordinates, a warning and a Google Maps link. No GPS coordinates found means the file carries none. A location stamp printed on the picture itself is part of the image and is not read.
How do I remove EXIF and GPS from a photo?
Select the photo and press Save a clean copy under Remove metadata. The picture is redrawn and saved as JPG or PNG without camera, date, GPS, IPTC or XMP tags. Your original file is not changed, and anything visible in the picture stays.
Why does a WhatsApp photo have no EXIF data?
WhatsApp and most social apps usually remove metadata from photos sent the normal way. Photos sent as a document, by email or through Drive normally keep it. Ask for the original file if you need the date or camera.
Can EXIF data prove a photo is real or unedited?
No. Tags can be edited, removed or copied from another file, and the tool does not check the picture for editing. Treat the date, camera and location as useful clues, and compare them with other information.
Which files can I check, and how many?
JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, HEIC/HEIF and AVIF, up to 10 files at once, 30 MB each and 80 MB in total. The type is checked from the file's first bytes. Very large reports are shortened to 1,000 fields and say so.
Can I compare the metadata of two photos?
Yes. Add both, tick Compare on each and press Compare the 2 ticked. Every field is shown side by side with differences highlighted, which is handy for an original against a shared copy.
Can I download the EXIF report?
Yes, as CSV for a spreadsheet, JSON, plain text with Copy, or a printable page you can save as PDF. These use the fields that match your search. Download reports ZIP saves a full CSV for every file in the batch.
Are my photos sent to a server?
No. The metadata reader is built into this page and runs in your browser. Only Show HEIC preview loads a decoder from jsDelivr when you press it, without your photo. Reports are saved in the browser only if you press Save report.
