How this tag generator works
From your words first
Your browser picks the most-used words and two-word phrases from your text straight away, with no AI and nothing sent anywhere. That list always works.
Then AI ideas, checked
Google Gemini, with OpenRouter as backup, adds main, related and long-tail search tags. Each one whose words appear in your text gets a dot, so you can see which are exact matches.
Ready for each platform
A good set is picked for your platform. YouTube's 500-character limit is counted the way YouTube counts it, and you can copy as tags, #hashtags or one per line.
Check it yourself. Open your browser's developer tools (F12) and choose the Network tab. The "From your text" list makes no requests at all; AI tags make one request to our site, or go straight to Google or OpenRouter with your own key.
Common tagging problems
Find yours. Each button sets up the fix.
| Problem | Fix | Action |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube says my tags are too long | Pick YouTube; the counter adds the quote marks YouTube counts around multi-word tags. | |
| My tags don't match my video | Keep tags with a dot first; their words are in your own title or description. | |
| I need hashtags for the caption | Pick Instagram or TikTok and copy as #hashtags, or use the Hashtag Generator. | Hashtag Generator |
| "The shared AI is busy" | The "From your text" tags still work. For AI ideas, add your own free key. | |
| I also need a title and description | Write the full YouTube package with chapters. | YouTube generator |
How tags are counted and checked
The "From your text" list removes common words like "the" and "how", then ranks the remaining words and two-word phrases by how often they appear. AI tags are cleaned of #, punctuation and duplicates before you see them.
For YouTube, each tag counts its characters; a tag with a space also counts the two quote marks YouTube adds, and commas between tags count too. The tool keeps the automatic pick under about 400 so you have room to add your own.
Tags by platform
| Platform | Use | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Tags box: 500 characters in total | A few accurate tags; title and description matter more. |
| Blog / WordPress | 5 to 15 tags | Reuse the same tags across related posts so tag pages are useful. |
| Keywords in title and description | Pinterest reads your words; a few hashtags are optional. | |
| Instagram, TikTok | 3 to 5 hashtags plus keywords in the caption | Both apps search caption words, not just hashtags. |
| 3 to 5 hashtags | Use professional topic words. | |
| X | 1 or 2 hashtags | Extra tags eat into 280 characters. |
Tagging mistakes to avoid
Habits that waste effort or break platform rules.
Misleading tags break YouTube's spam rules. Tag only what's in the video.
More isn't better. A handful of accurate tags is enough.
Duplicates in different case waste space and add nothing.
Titles and descriptions matter far more than tags.
Good tagging habits
When tagging
- Put the main search phrase in your title first.
- Add common misspellings of hard words as tags.
- Use the same channel or series tag every time.
- Write tags in the language of your audience.
After publishing
- Check search terms in YouTube Studio or your blog's analytics.
- Add words people actually searched to your description.
- Remove tags that bring the wrong audience.
- Keep a tag list for each series you make.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers about tags, hashtags, limits and your data.
What's the difference between tags and hashtags?
Tags are search keywords you add in a separate field, like YouTube's Tags box or a blog's tag list; viewers don't see them. Hashtags (#chai) go in the visible caption on Instagram, TikTok and X. This tool gives you both: copy as comma-separated tags or as #hashtags.
How many characters can YouTube tags have?
500 in total. Multi-word tags count their spaces, and YouTube adds quote marks around them, which also count. The counter here adds those for you, so if it fits here it fits on YouTube.
Do YouTube tags still matter?
Only a little. YouTube says tags mainly help with commonly misspelled words; your title, thumbnail and description matter much more. Add a handful of accurate tags and spend the rest of your time on the title.
What does "In your text" mean?
The tag's words appear in what you pasted, so it's a safe, accurate match. Other tags are related ideas from the AI; keep only those that truly describe your content.
Is the tag generator free?
Yes. The shared AI gives every visitor 20 free sets an hour. The "From your text" list is worked out in your browser and always works, even without AI. If the shared AI is busy, add your own Gemini or OpenRouter key.
Are these trending tags?
No. Without each platform's own data, no tool can know what's trending right now. The tags here describe your content, which is what search systems match on.
Is my own API key safe?
Your key is kept in this browser session only and is sent directly from your browser to Google or OpenRouter, never to our server. Press Remove my keys when you're done, and avoid entering keys on shared devices.
Is what I paste saved?
With the shared AI, your text goes to our server and then to Google Gemini or OpenRouter, and identical requests are reused for 1 hour. The "From your text" list never leaves your browser. Your last 15 sets are saved only in this browser.
