What a PIN code tells you
India Post introduced the 6-digit Postal Index Number on 15 August 1972 to sort mail by machine-readable areas instead of place names.
Six digits, four levels
The first digit is the postal zone, the second a sub-region, the first three the sorting district, and the last three the delivery post office.
Circle, region, division
India Post groups offices into circles, mostly one per state, then regions and divisions. Results show all three for every office.
Head, sub and branch offices
A head office manages an area, sub offices serve towns, and branch offices serve villages. Offices that work together share a PIN.
Delivery or not
A delivery office has postmen. A non-delivery office still sells services, while another office with the same PIN brings the mail.

Search the town or the nearest post office name. Streets and colonies are not post office names.
Spelling not found
Names follow India Post's English spelling. Try variants, such as Thiruvananthapuram and Trivandrum.
Many offices for one PIN
Branch offices share the PIN of the office that delivers there. All of them are correct.
Shows Non-Delivery
That office has no postmen. Another office with the same PIN delivers, so the PIN is still right.
Valid format, no result
The PIN may not be in use, or was changed. Check the address with the recipient or India Post.
Lookup not available
The data service did not answer. The zone from the first digit still works; try again shortly.
Questions about PIN codes
What is a PIN code?
PIN stands for Postal Index Number, the 6-digit postal code India Post introduced on 15 August 1972. The first digit is the postal zone, the second narrows it to a sub-region, the first three together point to the sorting district, and the last three to the delivery post office.
Why does one PIN code show several post offices?
A PIN belongs to a delivery area. The sub office or head office that delivers there, and the smaller branch offices in its villages or neighbourhoods, all share the same PIN. Any of their names can be used in an address together with that PIN.
What do head office, sub office and branch office mean?
A head office (H.O.) is the main office of a postal area and handles accounts for the offices under it. A sub office (S.O.) offers most counter services in a town or locality. A branch office (B.O.) is a small office, often in a village, with basic postal and savings services.
What does Non-Delivery mean?
The office accepts and sells postal services but has no postmen of its own; mail for its area is delivered by another office with the same PIN. The PIN is still correct for addresses in that area.
Where does the data come from, and is it official?
Results come from the free postalpincode.in API, which collects its data from India Post. It is not an official India Post service and may lag behind recent changes, so for legal documents or bulk mailing, confirm the PIN on India Post's own website.
Why can't I find my area?
Name search matches post office names, not every street or colony. Search for the larger locality, town or the nearest post office instead, and try other English spellings, for example Vadodara and Baroda. The PIN of that office covers the surrounding area.
Are my searches stored?
