What this notepad does, and what it doesn't
A browser notepad is quick and private, but it is not cloud storage. Here is exactly where your notes live.
✓What it does
- Saves as you type, in this browser's local storage, a moment after you stop typing, and again when you leave the page.
- Keeps many notes, each with its own word goal and version history, and finds them with search.
- Formats simply: bold, italic, headings, lists, quotes and tick boxes. Pasted text is cleaned, so scripts and odd styles never come along.
- Lets you take your notes with you: download as .txt, Markdown or HTML, print or save as PDF, or back up every note in one file.
- Works without a connection once the page has loaded, and needs no account.
✕What it doesn't do
- Sync between devices or browsers. Notes written in Chrome on your laptop are not in Safari on your phone. Use a backup file to move them.
- Keep notes in private or incognito windows. They are gone when the window closes.
- Survive clearing your browser data. "Clear cookies and site data" deletes them too. Some browsers, such as Safari, may also remove data for sites you haven't visited for a few weeks.
- Encrypt or lock your notes. Anyone who uses this browser profile can open this page and read them. Don't keep passwords or bank details here.
- Store unlimited text. Browsers allow about 5 MB per website, shared with our other tools. That is still a few thousand pages of plain text.
- Let others edit with you. It is a personal notepad, not a shared document.
How to keep your notes safe

Back up now and then
Press Back up all notes to download one .json file with every note and its history. Restore a backup brings them back in any browser.
Keep the file in Google Drive or OneDrive
Use a normal window
Private and incognito windows start empty and forget everything when closed. Write in a normal window.

If the same note is open in two tabs, the notepad notices and asks which version to keep, so one tab doesn't silently overwrite the other.

On a Mac, use Cmd instead of Ctrl. They work while you are typing in the note.

How to use the online notepad
Start typing
Click in the note and write. The first line becomes the note's name in the list.
Format if you like
Use the toolbar for bold, headings, lists and tick boxes, or keep it plain.
Add more notes
Press New note. Search the list to find any note by a word inside it.
Check your numbers
Words, characters, reading time and an optional word goal update as you type.
Take it with you
Copy the text, download it as .txt, .md or .html, or print it and save as PDF.
Back up
Download a backup of all notes now and then, and restore it in any browser.
Frequently asked questions
Is this online notepad free? Do I need an account?
It is free, with no sign-up, no login and no limit on the number of notes. Open the page and start typing.
Where are my notes saved? Can anyone else read them?
Your notes are saved in this browser's local storage on your device. They are never sent to allinonetools.net or anywhere else, so we can't read them. Anyone who uses the same browser profile on your device can open this page and see them, so don't keep passwords or bank details here.
Will my notes still be here when I come back?
Yes, in the same browser on the same device, as long as you don't clear your browser's site data or write in a private or incognito window. Safari may remove data for websites you haven't opened for a few weeks. Download a backup now and then for anything important.
Can I open my notes on my phone or another computer?
Not automatically: nothing is synced. Press Back up all notes to download one file, move it to the other device (by email, Google Drive or a USB stick) and press Restore a backup there.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded you can keep writing without a connection, and your notes keep saving in the browser.
Can I get back text I deleted or replaced?
Press Ctrl+Z straight away to undo. For older changes, open Version history: it keeps up to 20 copies of each note, saved every few minutes while you write and before big changes such as Replace all.
What happens if the same note is open in two tabs?
The notepad notices when another tab saves the note. If you haven't changed it here, it simply loads the newer text. If both tabs have changes, it asks which version to keep and puts the other one in Version history.
Which file formats can I download?
Plain text (.txt), Markdown (.md) and a web page (.html). Print or save as PDF uses your browser's print window. You can also open .txt, .md and .html files as new notes.
Why did pasted pictures or colours disappear?
The notepad keeps text and simple formatting only: bold, italic, underline, headings, lists, quotes and links. Pictures, colours, fonts and anything that could run code are removed when you paste. Press Ctrl+Shift+V to paste plain text.
I used the earlier notepad on this page. Where is my note?
If you wrote it in this same browser, it is moved into the new notepad automatically the first time you open it, with its saved versions. Backups (.json) from the earlier notepad can also be opened with Restore a backup.
How much can I write?
Browsers give each website about 5 MB of storage, shared with our other tools. That is a few thousand pages of plain text. The amount you are using is shown under your notes list.
