Settings guide

What each control actually does

Control What it does Recommended use Best for
Rotate left / right Turns your image 90° at a time before recognition, so sideways or upside-down phone photos read correctly. Fix orientation first Photos taken with the phone turned sideways.
Language Tells the OCR engine which alphabet and word patterns to expect. The matching language model downloads once per session the first time you select it. Match the text's actual language Getting accurate recognition for non-English text.
Extract Text Runs the real OCR engine on your image and fills in the text panel, along with an estimated accuracy score. Takes longer on the first run Turning a photo or screenshot into usable text.
Extracted Text panel A fully editable text area — fix any OCR mistakes directly before copying or downloading. Always proofread Cleaning up recognition errors before use.
Copy to clipboard / Download .txt Copies the current text panel contents, or saves them as a plain text file. Reflects your edits Getting the text into another document or app.

Browser technology

How the text is recognized in your browser

This tool runs Tesseract, a real, widely-used open-source OCR engine, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs directly on your device.

What happens when you click Extract Text

Your chosen language's trained model is downloaded once and cached by your browser, if it hasn't been used yet this session.
Your image, with any rotation applied, is handed to the OCR engine, which runs entirely in a background thread so the page stays responsive.
The engine analyzes character shapes and word patterns to produce text, along with a confidence score for how certain it is.
The result is placed directly into the editable text panel — your image itself is never sent anywhere.

Honest by design

What this tool does — and doesn't

Stated plainly, before you run into it, rather than only after the text comes out wrong.

Handwriting

Handles printed and typed text well — books, documents, screenshots, signs.
Is not built for handwriting — accuracy on handwritten notes will generally be poor, since that needs different technology entirely.

Accuracy score

Shows the OCR engine's own genuine confidence estimate for what it extracted.
Isn't a guarantee of correctness — a high score can still contain mistakes, so always proofread.

Layout handling

Works well on single-column text like paragraphs, letters, and simple documents.
Doesn't perform layout analysis, so multi-column pages, tables, and forms often come out with a jumbled reading order.

Language downloads

Caches each language's model after first use, so switching back to it later in the same session is fast.
Needs an internet connection the first time you use any given language, to download that language's model.

Image quality sensitivity

The rotate control genuinely improves results on sideways or upside-down photos.
Can't compensate for blur, very low resolution, low contrast, or extreme skew — a clearer photo will always outperform any setting here.

Your privacy

Processes your image entirely on your device — it's never uploaded anywhere.
Does download the OCR engine and your selected language's model from a CDN — the only outside requests this page makes.

Common use cases

Popular ways to use this tool

Problem / use case Recommended settings Result, benefits & where to use
Digitizing a printed page Turning a book page or document photo into editable text. Straighten with rotate first Editable text ready to paste into a document.
Copying text from a screenshot Text in an image that can't be selected normally. Works well as-is, no rotation needed Selectable, copyable text from a flat screenshot.
Reading a foreign-language sign or menu Extracting text in a non-English language. Match the Language dropdown Extracted text ready to paste into a translator.
Sideways phone photo of a document A photo taken with the phone rotated. Rotate left/right until upright Correct orientation before recognition, much higher accuracy.
Business card or receipt Small, dense printed text. Use a sharp, well-lit photo Extracted contact details or line items, ready to edit.
Multi-column article or table A newspaper clipping or spreadsheet screenshot. Expect a jumbled reading order Text is extracted but may need manual reordering.

Troubleshooting

Common issues & quick fixes

The extracted text is mostly wrong

Check the image is right-side up, sharp, and well-lit, and that the Language matches the text.

  • Use Rotate to fix orientation before extracting again

Text order looks jumbled

This usually happens with multi-column layouts or tables, which this tool doesn't specially handle.

  • Reorder the text manually in the editable panel

Extraction is taking a long time

The first use of a language in a session downloads that language's model, which can take a moment.

  • Later extractions in the same language will be faster

My handwriting wasn't recognized well

This tool is built for printed and typed text, not handwriting.

  • Handwriting needs different, specialized recognition technology

The accuracy score seems low

A lower score usually means the image had blur, low contrast, or unusual fonts.

  • Proofread carefully, and retake the photo with better lighting if possible

I want to start over completely

Use the × button on the image to remove it and upload a new one.

  • Nothing is saved between visits either way

Frequently asked questions

Image to text converter questions

Does this work on handwriting?

Not reliably. This tool is built for printed or typed text. Handwriting recognition uses very different technology and accuracy here will generally be poor.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read and processed entirely in your browser. The only network request is a one-time download of the OCR engine and the language model you select.

Why is some of my text missing or wrong?

OCR accuracy depends heavily on image quality: blur, low contrast, small text, skewed or sideways photos, and complex multi-column layouts all reduce accuracy.

What does the accuracy percentage mean?

It's the OCR engine's own confidence estimate for the text it extracted, not a guarantee of correctness. Always proofread the result.

Which languages are supported?

English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Chinese (Simplified), Arabic, Japanese, Russian, and Portuguese.

Can I extract text from a multi-column document or table?

You can, but reading order often gets jumbled, since this tool doesn't perform layout analysis. Single-column text works best.

Why does the first extraction take longer than the next one?

The OCR engine and your selected language's model are downloaded once and cached by your browser, so the first run in a session is slower than later ones.
