Tall or retaining walls need an engineer. Walls over about 7 ft, walls holding back soil, and walls on soft or filled ground must be designed for wind and earth pressure.

How the cost is worked out
Masonry walls are built as a frame: footings and columns at a spacing, a plinth beam along the length, and the wall between them.
- Rates are for finished work: materials plus labour per cft or sq.ft.
- Quality scales rates: basic 0.9, standard 1, premium 1.2.
- Location scales the labour part, about 40%, from village 0.85 to metro 1.28.

Questions
What does a boundary wall cost per running foot?
With this calculator's town rates at standard quality, a 6 ft high 9 inch brick wall with RCC columns, plinth beam, plaster and paint on both faces comes to about ₹2,600 per running foot including footings. A 4.5 inch brick wall is about ₹2,200 and precast panels about ₹1,500. Change the height, type and finish to see your own figure.
How many bricks does a boundary wall need?
About 13.5 standard bricks per cubic foot of 9 inch wall, plus 5% breakage. A 6 ft high 9 inch wall uses roughly 55 to 60 bricks per running foot after leaving space for the columns.
How far apart should columns be?
About 10 ft for 9 inch brick and block walls and 8 ft for 4.5 inch walls. Longer gaps let the wall crack or lean in wind. Gate openings get two stronger pillars.
How deep should the foundation be?
For a 5 to 7 ft wall on firm soil, column footings are often 3 to 5 ft deep with a plinth beam joining them. Soft, black cotton or filled soil needs deeper footings designed by an engineer.
Is 4.5 inch brick enough for a boundary wall?
Only for low walls, up to about 5 ft, with columns every 8 ft. For taller walls use 9 inch brick or 8 inch blocks. The calculator warns you when the height is beyond the usual limit for the wall type.
Precast or brick wall: which is better?
Precast walls go up in days and suit long perimeters of farms, factories and layouts. Brick and block walls cost more but are more solid, look better and can take plaster, paint and cladding.
Does the estimate include the gate?
Yes, if you tick MS gate. It prices a fabricated and painted mild steel gate for the opening width and up to 7 ft height. Automatic gates, motors and decorative designs cost more.
