How to test it

  1. Press Try with a sample card. It opens a specimen card with a made-up number.
  2. Drag a box around the whole number 0000 1111 2222. Only 2222 should stay visible.
  3. Choose Cover area, drag over the QR code, then Download JPG and open the file to check.

Your card is processed only in this browser. PDFs load a PDF reader from jsDelivr the first time.

How this Aadhaar masking tool works

Smart number box

Draw one box around the full 12-digit number and the tool covers the first two groups of four, leaving the last 4 digits readable, just like UIDAI's masked Aadhaar.

Cover anything else

Hide the QR code, photo, address, date of birth or VID with solid boxes, and stamp the copy with its purpose and today's date so it is harder to reuse elsewhere.

A new, flattened file

The download is a fresh image or PDF with the covers painted in. The hidden digits aren't underneath, and your photo's location and phone details aren't copied over.

Check it yourself. Open your browser's developer tools (F12), choose the Network tab and mask a card. Your file is never sent anywhere. For PDFs, the only request is the PDF reader library itself.

When to share a masked Aadhaar

Find your situation. The watermark text changes to suit it.

SituationWhat to hideAction
Hotel check-in or travel booking First 8 digits and the QR code. Hotels only need to confirm who you are.
Renting a flat or police verification First 8 digits. Keep the address visible if it's needed as proof.
A new job, college or gym asks for ID First 8 digits, QR code and anything not asked for.
Sending ID on WhatsApp or email Always mask it, and add the purpose and date. Chats get forwarded.
Bank account, SIM or loan KYC These may need the full number or e-KYC. Ask first, and still add a watermark to copies.

What to hide on an Aadhaar card

A masked Aadhaar replaces the first 8 digits with X and keeps the last 4, so the card still identifies you but the full number can't be copied into other applications.

The Aadhaar number is printed in three groups of four. The number box covers the first two groups and the gap after them, so draw it from the first digit to the last and it lines up on printed cards and e-Aadhaar alike. You can undo and redraw at any time.

Everything is drawn onto a new canvas in your browser and exported from there, which removes the covered pixels and the original file's hidden details together.

Aadhaar sharing mistakes

Scammers and data miners take advantage of these.

Blurring the number

Blur can sometimes be sharpened back. Use a solid cover.

Hiding the number, not the QR

The QR code still holds your details, photo, and often your full number. Cover it when it isn't needed.

Uploading to "free" online editors

Your full card is sent to someone else's server. Mask it on your own device.

Copies with no purpose written

An unmarked copy can be reused for a loan or SIM. Write the purpose and date on it.

Habits that protect your Aadhaar

When sharing

  • Share a masked copy unless the full number is truly required.
  • Write the purpose and date on every copy.
  • Use a Virtual ID (VID) instead of your number where accepted.
  • Delete copies from WhatsApp chats and downloads once used.
  • Never share the OTP that comes with an Aadhaar request.

On the myAadhaar portal

  • Lock your biometrics when you're not using them.
  • Check your authentication history for unknown use.
  • Keep your registered mobile number up to date.
  • Generate a new VID if an old one was shared widely.
  • Report misuse to UIDAI on 1947.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about privacy, e-Aadhaar passwords and QR codes.

Is my Aadhaar card uploaded to your server?

No. The image or PDF is opened, masked and saved entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to our server. Photos keep working with the internet switched off once the page has loaded; for a PDF, the PDF reader library is downloaded from jsDelivr the first time you open one.

Is a masked Aadhaar accepted as ID proof?

UIDAI issues masked Aadhaar itself, showing only the last 4 digits, and recommends sharing it wherever the full number isn't required. Some services, like opening a bank account, still need the full number or e-KYC.

What is the password of my e-Aadhaar PDF?

The first 4 letters of your name as printed on the card, in capital letters, followed by your year of birth. For example, SURE1990 for Suresh Kumar born in 1990.

Should I also cover the QR code?

Yes, almost always. The QR code on Aadhaar contains your name, date of birth, gender, address and photo, and on older cards it can also hold the full Aadhaar number, so hiding the digits alone doesn't hide them. Leave it visible only if the person needs to scan it to verify you.

Can someone remove the black box and see the number?

No. The boxes are painted into a brand-new image, so the covered pixels are replaced, not layered on top. Blurring can sometimes be reversed, which is why this tool uses solid covers.

Can I use it for PAN cards, bank statements or other documents?

Yes. Use Cover area to hide any number, signature, photo or address, and the watermark to mark the copy for one purpose only.

Does the saved file keep my phone's location or camera details?

No. The masked copy is a new image, so the original photo's hidden details, such as GPS location and phone model, are not copied into it.
